Fireflies attract attention
THANIN WEERADET
Tambon Bang Nam Phueng sits by the bank of Chao Phraya River in Phra Pradaeng district of Samut Prakan Province. The area has fortunately got away with minimal urban development making it the last remaining piece of greenery close to Bangkok. In recent years Bang Nam Phueng's old market has been drawing day-trippers during weekends. Those wishing to experience country life can subscribe to homestay packages provided by local operators.
Now that the area has become increasingly popular, the tambon is introducing a new activity: firefly tours after dark. As the area is surrounded by water and rich with greenery, fireflies abound. Guided tours operated by local residents are available three times a day every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7-10pm. The cost is 30 baht per person. Call 02-819-6762, 02-461-3253 for details.
Meanwhile, the Tourism Authority of Thailand's Central Region VIII director Benjawan Sunetworakul, recommends that travellers keen to experience rural Thai life should arrive in Samut Prakan in the morning and start by visiting Phra Samut Chedi, the Chula Chomklao Fortress and proceed to Bang Nam Phueng in the afternoon. Then they can unwind by subscribing to any of the homestay packages put up by local residents before going out to watch fireflies in the evening.
The next day their host will lead them out early in the morning to offer alms to monks. Roads in the area are narrow with very light traffic, ideal for bicycling. They can pedal to Wat Bang Nam Phueng Nok and the Suan Si Nakhon Khuen Khan Park.
Alternatively, they can drive early to Samut Prakan and visit the Erawan Elephant Museum, the Ancient City and end their tour in Bang Poo.
Getting there by car: From Bangkok take the expressway to Suksawat and turn left at the Phra Pradaeng-Suksawat T-junction. Follow the road to Phra Pradaeng market. Turn left and drive past Wat Song Tham for another five kilometres and you will spot a road sign pointing to Bang Nam Phueng. Turn right there and drive for another kilometre and you will reach the Bang Nam Phueng public health office where you can park your car.
By bus: Air-conditioned buses Nos. 138 and 140, and ordinary buses Nos. 82 and 506 ply the route.
