Nakhornnayok

History

Nakornnayok is a province situated in the central region, believed to have been an ancient city in the Tarawadee Era. There is an evidence proving the existence of walls made of soil and canal banks found in the Donglakorn Sub-district. However, the name Nakornnayok, on the east side, is proven to be the forefront of battles in the Ayuthaya Dynasty. During the U-thong Dynasty, in the year 1894 (B.E.2437), former King Rama V decreed the sub-division of the ruling administrative regions. Nakornnayok then belonged to the Prachinburi administrative region until 1902 (B.E. 2445). Later on, King Rama V mandated to abolish the ruling administrative region system and shifted into provincial administration. Nakornnayok was then only a fraction of the Saraburi-Prachinburi province. Afterwards, Nakornnayok had been recognised as an independent province.
During the Krung-Sri Ayuthaya era, Baan Na, the former name of Nakornnayok, had plentiful of plains and forest with a vast area of paddy fields. However, resident farmers were frustrated not reaping anything despite their toil in agricultural endeavours. People then began evacuating also for the reason of avoiding the common flu-like sickness in the area. Later on, the King knew about the situation so he passed an order to abolish taxes on plantation in order to bring back the townsfolk who had fled. From then on, people began returning to their former homes creating an even larger community. The townspeople had always been used to calling "Muang Na-Yok" which when translated into English means "State of paddy fields, free from plantation taxes". Until now, Thai people still call the province "Nakorn Na Yok - a state of paddy fields, free from plantation taxes".

Topography

The area is generally flat in the north eastern part close to Dong Phyayen Mountain, to
its central and southern direction are Khao Yai, Khao Khiyaw, Khao Changok, and Khao Nangrong mountains, to name a few. These mountains are the sources of the magnificent streams and waterfalls.

Nakornnayok has an area of 2,122 sq. kms. along the boundary of Saraburi province, in the northern region; and towards the west is Pathumthani province. Nakornnayok is divided into 4 districts, viz. Muang, BaanNa, Ongkarak, and Pakphlee. The total population reaches 248,055; of which 122,980 are male, and 125,075, female. (Survey as of June 2001)

The old Central Shrine was made of wooden poles of about 1 metre long and at the tip of the poles were sculptures of lotus flower. The old Shrine was erected nearby the ancient city walls, but then in the year 1910 (B.E. 2453) the reigning monarch observed that it was dilapidated so he instructed to install a new shrine at the "Red Building" of provincial school for girls, Sri Nakornnayok School. Later on, a new shrine was erected alongside Na-kornnayok river in the Chalerm Phrakiat Rama IX Public Park. The shrine was majestically built in order to serve as a sweet garland for the province of Nakornnayok.

The colossal Wad Yai Thakhinaram Temple, one of the oldest temples ever, is located alongside Nakornnayok river in Baan Yai, Muang District. It is told that during the French-Laotian war, Vientianne inhabitants who suffered defeat found refuge in this place passing through the southern route and Baan Yai Lao in Muang District. A temple was built in the year 1780 (B.E. 2323) calledWad Yai Lao and in 1941 (B.E. 2484) the name was changed to Wad Yai Thakhinaram Temple. The Temple, constructed by Vientienne crafts-men, has a width of 6 metres, length of 10.15 metres, height of 10 metres and is surrounded by glass walls. The temple is adorned with porcelain roof, sculptured wooden doors, a frame of a giant raising a bludgeon with gods joined together in its feet and waist. Source of Ancient Literature, Donglakorn House

Better known as Donglakorn town, located at Donglakorn Sub-district, was successfully registered as one of the national ancient spots on 8th March 1935 (B.E. 2478). Donglakorn town, an ancient town known as Lablae Town - 9 km. south of the town centre, has walls made from soil and ditches surround-ing the town. The locals refer to the place as "Sankhoo Muang" (Town Ditch), which serves as a gateway to central Thailand.

The most noticeable part is the division into 2 parts; the first part dates back to the 14th-16th Buddhist century - of Dvaravati culture - and the second part between 17th and 19th Buddhist century - of Khmer culture and the dynasty prior to Sri Ayudhya. It is assumed that there is importance about Srimahasoth Town, which is 55 kms. away, and the ancient artifacts found such as the gold-plated, little-finger-sized Siern image, crab figure ring, elephants, bronze ring, glass wiper, stone wiper, bronze earrings.

According to Lablae historical records, this town, which used to be a forest, belonged to Queen Khom. Whoever wanders around the place would have very little chance to get out as gigantic trees flourish the surroundings. On the day the trees were being cut-off sounds from a fiddle, a flute, and string instruments resembled an orchestra and as if there was a stage play being performed, hence the name "Dong Lakorn" (Forest of Stage Play).

Chaopho Khundan Shrine

The Shrine, found on top of a cliff in Pornhamanee Sub-district, Muang Dis-trict, Nakornnayok, is frequented by the locals for reverential worship. Following the records, Chaopho Khundan worked as a Revenue Officer during the SriAyudhya dynasty. In the year 1587 (B.E. 2130) under the reign of Great King Phranarewasora-maharaj, his bravery was proven when he fought against and drove out Khmer forces who tried to invade the kingdom and enslave Thais particularly from Prachinburi province. Simultaneously, Thailand was at war against Burma. Khundan assembled an assault force, mainly from Nakornnayok, on Changok mountain that would retrieve Prachinburi and Nakornnayok provin-ces and defeat Khmer invaders. During World War II, the Japanese troops led an army on Changok mountain and tried to demolish Chaopho Khundan Shrine but then miraculous powers crushed the Japanese invaders killing a quite number of their men.
