History
This provincial town has a long history dating from the Ayudhaya period. One of the province's most famous attractions is a special Buddha image called "Luang Phor Phutthasothorn" kept in the town's main temple. Legend has it that the image of Buddha floated upstream on the Bangpakong river to the town and Chacherngsao's people brought the image into their temple on the river's bank. The revered Bhuddha image attracts thousands to the temple every year. Many other beautiful temples can be found in the province.
This town was originally under the
authority of the Defence Ministry then
later transferred to the Interior
Department under King Rama I of the Rattanakosin dynasty (1782-1808). King Rama the fifth (1868-1910) changed raised the township's status to a city under the control of Prachinburi County. In 1916, the town was established as the capitol of its own province.
